The Wilderness Nearby

Adults and children of all ages delight in our region's natural beauty. Dominating the landscape are the Green Mountains, very old as mountain ranges go, having been sculpted to their present form through several ice ages. Throughout the year the region's natural beauty shines through, evident in the new-fallen snow, the many greens of spring, the summer wildflowers, and the unsurpassed fall colors.

Clear-running rivers and streams flow freely, attracting abundant wildlife. Many wild creatures live here year-round, including moose, beaver, deer, wild turkeys, and black bears. Our state bird (and a true Vermonter!) is the Hermit Thrush, alone among the spotted thrushes to winter in the north. Other songbirds such as the much-studied Bicknell's Thrush, a prime research project of the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, spend summers here and winter as far away as Central America.

The more you explore the natural world of Eastern Vermont, the more you'll find to intrigue and delight you in our wilderness areas, museums and wildlife refuges. Come, explore, and enjoy the nature of our world.
